Printing with lead type

Nowadays, a text can be printed from screen with just two clicks of a mouse. In the past, you would have to hand over the manuscript to a typesetter. The typesetter reconstructed it in lead type, but first had to decide on the type and size of the font as well as the position of the picture. Since lead type is set in mirror image he had to learn to read in mirror image as well. Participants of Entirely My Book workshop series will ornament their text, composed of lead type, with their ornamental initial and press the entire composition on paper, handmade by them. The following day they will supplement the text with their own illustration.

About the mentor: Born in 1968 in Ljubljana. He studied caligraphy and carving of letters in 1991/1992 in Kristoffel Boudens studio in Antwerpen, Belgium. After his return to Slovenia he worked for a year with the stonecutting master Boris Udovč from Naklo near Kranj. In 2000 he graduated from art history (with caligraphic analysis of the medieval Bible) and library sciences. He worked as a librarian in the library of Slovene Ethnographioc Museum from 2000-2006. He has cofounded Zadruga studio. He has been working on reviving letterpress technique since 2009.
