Hand papermaking

Can we make our own paper? During the workshop, a master of hand papermaking will reveal a centuries old procedure for making paper. Participants will first prepare a mixture of water and cotton fibres, and then scoop it with a special sieve. With a bit of dexterity they will be able to control the thickness of the paper. Adding flowers to the mixture creates an even more special piece of paper. The master will explain how to imprint a watermark, as well as why you can write in ink on some types of paper while it “runs” on others.

In the following days, participants of the workshop series Entirely My Book will press with lead types a beautiful text on their paper, adding a handmade ornamental letter and illustration, pressed off a woodcut.

About the mentor: Born in 1968 in Ljubljana. He studied caligraphy and carving of letters in 1991/1992 in Kristoffel Boudens studio in Antwerpen, Belgium. After his return to Slovenia he worked for a year with the stonecutting master Boris Udovč from Naklo near Kranj. In 2000 he graduated from art history (with caligraphic analysis of the medieval Bible) and library sciences. He worked as a librarian in the library of Slovene Ethnographioc Museum from 2000-2006. He has cofounded Zadruga studio. He has been working on reviving letterpress technique since 2009.
