BadNews - type design for newspaper

The BadNews font is most likely the vastest work in this field in Slovenia so far. The author will take us on a trip through a series of problems and solutions that he reached during his design and that were dictated by the specifics of a printed newspaper. The font is finished, the trials have been concluded, but is the work of a typographer finished? A high number of cuts helps the newspaper’s art editor, but prior to this we need to build a hierarchical system of articles, titles, texts, and all other forms that can be found in a newspaper; one also has to take into account that an increasing number of entries are also available in electronic forms, and that a fast working process needs to be ensured.

About the lecturer: Samo Ačko is a visual communication and font designer. He graduated with the thesis Newspaper Design and Fonts from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. He received the Brumen award at the 4th Biennial of Slovene Visual Communication for the BadNews font, which emerged as a part of his graduation thesis. A year prior to this his informational scheme of the bus routes in Ljubljana received the BIO award for the best student work at the Biennial of Industrial Design.Following one year of living in Uganda, where he cooperated with the organisation Edirisa, he currently works and lives in Ljubljana.
