About the Festival

Can you imagine a part of human knowledge disappearing in just decades, after it has been in use for 450 years? Lead type printing is just one of the book related crafts which is currently dying out. The purpose of the first Festival of Letters is to awaken and revive this knowledge, to share it with the young and the old, to stimulate creativity, to prove that old techniques offer new forms. A bunch of type-enthusiasts will demonstrate that a letter can be seriously played with, that it can be carved into stone, chiseled, worn in your pocket, stretched along the ceiling, unfolded over the screen or rolled over with a construction roller, weighing several tons.
